It’s a Good Question, especially in this day and age – Is College Worth It? A lot of people are wrestling with this question these days, as their debts add up more and more. I think you would agree that it’s a difficult decisison which direction to go in if you don’t have the funds stashed away or financial support from family. Of course, it’s different if you by chance have a Scholarship. A Scholarship definitely changes the outlook financially. But not every graduating student can count on scholarship funds. So, it depends on so many factors and may be quite different for every individual that asks the question. Here are a few factors that obviously come into play:
- What career are you interested in?
- Have you thought about how much debt you feel you can take on in your future?
- Does this career path have the realistic potential to bring you financial income? Enough to handle the debt in your future?
- Is there a specific kind of Personal Growth that you envision for yourself and your future?
- Maybe a Trade School that offers learning all kinds of working trades would be just the ticket (and would have much lower costs). This turned out to be the perfect answer when my son graduated from High School!
After answering and thinking about each of these questions, isn’t the big question IS COLLEGE WORTH IT becoming more of a qualified decision you will have to make? Yes, it certainly depends upon what you are leaning toward—maybe you are thinking about a particular career, or maybe you are actually just generally weighing the pros and cons?
The POSITIVE SIDE:
You must know that fields that require specialized education or credentials (like medicine, law, or engineering), would almost certainly require getting certified in that field. When that direction is a person’s interest and intent, college is almost always worth it.
- During your College education doors to multiple careers can open up for you.
- Expanding your personal development is a true benefit while in college.
- Exposure to many different ideas and opportunities.
- Chances are you can and will also make lifelong connections.
The NEGATIVE SIDE:
Keep in mind that there are other options to go into a career that don’t involve going to a college. It’s less clear how valuable or necessary a college degree would be, especially in tech, when other options are available. Such options as these might be enough to get you where you want to go:
- Hands-on experience?
- Maybe Networking?
- Bootcamps offered that are less costly? or even
- Learning “online”.
We absolutely must consider the rising costs of tuition. Will the end result after taking your Time, Money and Energy make this decision a good investment for you personally?

Our Online Community has done a little research about the current atmosphere, or status of college learning in the United States and found some disappointing statistics below.
CLEARLY College is not making People Smarter.
- 45 percent of students “did not demonstrate any significant improvement in learning” over the first two years of college. Close to 40 percent didn’t learn anything at all over all four years.
- Many Students Never Really Studied, with 35 percent reporting less than 5 hours a week in study time.
- The average learning time reported is only 2.67 hours a day. Twice that time is spent shopping, eating, and partying.
- There is a consistent increase in Adult illiteracy. Most College Grads fall below average in Cognitive Tasks. (Such as calculating the costs of foods in a Grocery Store).
- College Grads in the US test at or less than High School kids in several other Countries.
- Top Universities are declining in their Academic Rigor.
- College GPA averages are over 3.0 and yet College Classes get flimsier. Grade Inflation Highest at Private Schools. More Students are Failing, but yet nobody fails.
$Billions in Tax-Payer dollars are being sent to these Institutions??? WHAT!!! If this was a Private Business there would be Fraud Indictments.
Price is a mystery. Just simply figuring out how much college actually costs is a top pain point in funding higher education, tied with understanding the financing options. 28{05f26463217bca762f8eb17ec2a6e49e97cb64dd2d9617edaa9286fdad1ddf16} of respondents say they have “absolutely no idea” how much a four-year college tuition and experience costs, and when they attempted to wager a guess, their estimates fell 30{05f26463217bca762f8eb17ec2a6e49e97cb64dd2d9617edaa9286fdad1ddf16} to 65{05f26463217bca762f8eb17ec2a6e49e97cb64dd2d9617edaa9286fdad1ddf16} short of actual costs.
Without a clear understanding of the numbers they’re dealing with, prospective borrowers can feel paralyzed — and truly unable to make decisions. In fact, fewer than half of all students and parents of students (44{05f26463217bca762f8eb17ec2a6e49e97cb64dd2d9617edaa9286fdad1ddf16}) say they feel well informed — or informed at all — about student loans.
They’re down on debt. The stigma around debt is high for Gen Z, which has seen the impact that student loans have taken on older generations. And it’s not only borrowing, it’s simply discussing debt: 68{05f26463217bca762f8eb17ec2a6e49e97cb64dd2d9617edaa9286fdad1ddf16} of young people and their parents would rather talk about sensitive topics like their sex life than debt.
Some are ghosting their loans. Uncertainty about student loans has some ignoring their debt altogether. More than one-third of student borrowers say they have no intention of paying back their loans: 20{05f26463217bca762f8eb17ec2a6e49e97cb64dd2d9617edaa9286fdad1ddf16} say they are waiting for them to be forgiven, and 15{05f26463217bca762f8eb17ec2a6e49e97cb64dd2d9617edaa9286fdad1ddf16} say they plan to default.
And today 93{05f26463217bca762f8eb17ec2a6e49e97cb64dd2d9617edaa9286fdad1ddf16} of student loan borrowers say that, given the chance, they would have approached their college financing differently.
